What are Mood Disorders?

Depression and Bipolar are two of the more prominent types of mood disorders.

With Depressive episodes one can experience feelings of sadness, numbness, or a lack of energy that can last days, weeks, or months. Over 7% of the population in the US has experienced at least one major depressive episode in the past year.  One may experience changes in sleeping, eating, or hygiene routines or may also find that they are no longer interested in things they used to find enjoyable.

With Bipolar Disorder, one will often have Depressive episodes but also experience periods of feeling unusually happy or high (manic). During these manic episodes sleep and daily functioning can be severely impacted. These symptoms can fluctuate in varying rates and even overlap leading to a mix of emotions and feelings.
